Poets Corner

Poets Corner...

Whilst having an enjoyable meal or relaxing over drinks and coffee in the hotel lounge, some of our guests have been inspired to put pen to paper. We very much appreciate all the effort that goes into producing these masterpieces of verse and feel that the time is right to start a Poet's Corner in order to publish these inspiration ditties and rhymes. If you feel moved to join our featured poets, please feel free to send them in and we will publish them onto our site for others to enjoy.

Love's Philosophy

* The fountains mingle with the river and the winds with the ocean.
* The winds of heaven mix forever with a sweet emotion.
* Nothing in the world is single, all things by a law divide.
* In one another's being mingle - why not I with thine?
* See the mountains kiss high heaven and the waves clasp one another.
* No sister flower would be forgiven if it disdain'd its brother.
* And the sunlight clasps the earth, and the moonbeams kiss the sea.
* What are all those kissings worth, if thou kiss not me?

Shelly

( Rhys Roberts's favourite poem )

If a sportsman true you'd be, listed carefully to me

* Never, never let your gun pointed be at anyone, that it may unloaded be, matters of the least to me.
* When a hedge or fence you cross, though of time it cause a loss, from your gun the cartridge take for the greater safety's sake.
* If twixt you and neighbouring gun birds may fly and beasts may run, let the maxim e'er be thine -FOLLOW NOT ACROSS THE LINE.
* Stops and beaters oft unseen lurk behind some leafy screen, calm and steady always be - NEVER SHOOT WHERE YOU CAN'T SEE.
* Keep you place and silent be - game can hear and game can see.
* Don't be greedy, better spared is a pheasant than one shared.
* You may kill or you may miss, but at times just think of this - all the pheasants ever bred won't repay for one man dead!

Luncheon at the Tiverton Hotel

It felt quite warm
Sat there in the sun,
In our favourite place
At Table One.

We'd just had lunch
And they'd done us proud,
As they always do,
Be it two or a crowd.

There'd been melon to start,
Then beef for "S"
And I'd had the fish,
All beautifully fresh.

No sweet today
We were quite full up,
Just a coffee to end,
In a plain white cup.

Now time to leave
We'd had our fun,
It's a wrench to leave
From Table One.

So into the bar
With a wave to Jane,
Reception next
And a word to Wayne.

Then out to the car park
Where the sky's turning black.
And a shivering "S" said,
"Next week let's come back".

On his last visit to the Hotel Mr Cox picked up a copy of 'Its Christmas' giving details of our festive events.  Mr Cox thought the New Year's Eve menu was particularly impressive and was inspired to compose the following:

Black Tie and Posh Frocks

New Year's Eve and it's Gala Night
Let the Old Year out, it's done, it's gone
Ring the New Year in with all your might
For it's 'Carriages at One'.

The buffet's there from a quarter to eight
'Lobster Bisque' and 'Grand Marnier Crème'
The tables groan with the sumptuous weight
And it's 'Carriages at One'.

Roast Suckling Pig with a Honey Glaze
Turkey Breast and a big, big Ham
There's Wild Game to tempt your gaze
But it's 'Carriages at One'.

There's Feta Cheese, Cous Cous and Melon
Beansprout, Grapes and Eastern Olives
Beetroot, Chives or Waldorf Salad
And it's 'Carriages at One'.

The clock strikes twelve and it's Hogmanay.
'Haggis, Neeps and Tatties' time
Charge your glass and drink a toast
For it's Carriages at One.

Or you could stay beyond that call
(The special rate's not dear at all)
Black Tie and Posh Frock's been admired by all
Then for you no 'Carriages at One'.

Paul Cox the hotels prolific poet has composed his latest offering following Rhys's appearance on Britain's Best Dish. We reproduce it here with his kind permission.

Britain's Best Dish

We sat on the sofa, ' S ' and me,

And settled down to watch TV.

The dishes done, our guests all gone,

Our programme now just coming on.

Britain's Best Dish, the presenter said,

The contestants came in and at their head

A great suprise, a face we knew,

Rhys Roberts' , our pleasure grew.

For his special dish he'd chosen a starter.

Fresh caught sea bass on a bed of samphire.

We willed him on, we could do no less,

We willed him on to do his best.

Perhaps it worked for Rhys got through,

And went on then to join the few

Who now would cook in the region final.

We had high hopes, the dish was exceptional,

The day arrived, who would be the best ?

Who would go on and leave the rest ?

We had to wait for the end of the show,

Yes, Rhys was through ! and would onward go

To the national final, some weeks away

So again we must wait for a special day.

The day arrived.... but it was not to be,

Rhys just missed the final three,

But even now, with truth, we say,

The best starter dish in Wales and the West

Is here in Tiverton,

At the Best Western Hotel, no less.
